First Time Coming to Blaine – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Blaine was part of Anoka, Minnesota, until 1877, when it separated from Anoka and organized as its own township. Moses Ripley of Maine was elected to be the first Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. He succeeded in persuading his fellow board members to name the new Township after James G. Blaine, a Republican senator, Speaker of the House and three-time presidential candidate from that state. Blaine’s sandy soil and rich, numerous wetlands remained a prime hunting area, instead of being like other Anoka County communities that experienced growth from farming. It was only after World War II that home developments sprang up in the southern part of town transforming the small rural town into a more suburban one that for several years led the Twin Cities metro region in new home construction.

TODAY

Blaine’s population was 57,186 at the 2010 census, and the city is found mainly in Anoka County. It is part of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area with three main routes being Interstate Highway 35W, U.S. Highway 10, and Minnesota State Highway 65. The city is home to the 600-acre National Sports Center with 50 soccer fields, a velodrome, a golf course, and Schwan Super Rink that has 4 Olympic and 4 regulation ice rinks all under one roof.

PRIME LOCATION

According to the United States Census Bureau, Blaine’s total area of 34.05 square miles is 33.85 square miles of land and 0.20 square miles of water. The city is 13 miles from Minneapolis and 20 miles from St. Paul. Several major roadways link Blaine to the Twin Cities, including Minnesota State Highway 65, Interstate 35W, Lexington Avenue, University Avenue, Hamline Avenue, U.S. Highway 10, and Minnesota State Highway 610.

QUALITY OF LIFE

For 23 years, the National Sports Center has been the home of Minnesota’s professional soccer teams, although the now defunct Minnesota Thunder was there only from 1990-2003 and 2008-2009. The sports center rushed in to create the NSC Minnesota Stars for the 2009 season after losing the Thunder. NHL Player, Brandon Bochenski, was born in the city of Blaine in 1982. Other notable residents include Bryan Cupito, former starting quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers; Matt Hendricks, NHL Player; Kenny Williams, current general manager of the Chicago White Sox; David Backes, NHL Player; Nick Bjugstad, NHL Player; Patrick O’Bryant, professional basketball player; and Now, Now, Indie Rock band, who formed at Blaine High School in 2004.
