First Time Coming to Bloomington – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Peter and Louisa Quinn are the first Europeans to build a cabin along the Minnesota River in the Bloomington area in 1843. The government sent them in to instruct the Native Americans in farming methods. Gideon Hollister Pond was a missionary who had experience with the Dakota language. He and his family relocated later in the year and created Oak Grove Mission, where they conducted church services and schooling for the Dakota. It was settlers from Bloomington, Illinois, who named the town after their home town of Bloomington, which means “flowering field.”

TODAY

Bloomington, of Hennepin County, is the fifth largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is found on the north bank of the Minnesota River just above the river’s confluence with the Mississippi River. It is ten miles south of downtown Minneapolis, in the center of the southern metro area with a 2010 population of 82,893 people. Bloomington was created in the post-World War II housing boom, as a suburb tied to the urban street grid of Minneapolis. It has a huge city park system of over 1,000 square feet of parkland per capita.

PRIME LOCATION

Bloomington has a total area of 38.42 square miles and there are three types of land in the city. A sand plain comprises the northeastern part of the city, the western part of the city is predominantly low hills, and the southernmost part falls within the valley of the Minnesota River. There are two large natural areas, the first being Minnesota Valley’s wetlands, the second is the Hyland Lake Park Reserve. Interestingly, around one third of the city is permanently reserved for park purposes only. Bloomington has a number of bodies of water, including Bush Lake, Long Meadow Lake, Marsh Lake, Lake Normandale, Nine Mile Creek, Penn Lake and around one hundred small ponds and lakes with their wetland habitats.

QUALITY OF LIFE

An East Bloomington neighborhood was used as the scene for parts of the Coen brothers film, A Serious Man. The neighborhood’s young trees and original suburban Ranch-style houses gave it the 1960s new-development look they were looking for. The Hyland Park area contains both a ski area and Nordic ski jumps, maintained by the Minneapolis Ski Club. This ski club has produced a number of US Olympic ski jumpers, and they will host the 2013 Junior National competition. The city is home to Pete Docter, the Monsters, Inc. and Up animator/director.
