First Time Coming to Brooklyn Park – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Brooklyn Park serves as a “bedroom community” of both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Most land north of 85th was developed after 2000, and the city still has undeveloped land and farms. The historic Eidem Homestead is a still standing 1900s working farm that is a popular tourist attraction for both school field trips and families alike. The city was once called Brooklyn Township, but the township split in 1860. It was Michigan settlers who established the township formally and named it for their hometown of Brooklyn, Michigan.

TODAY

As the sixth most populous city in Minnesota, Hennepin County’s Brooklyn Park is found on the Mississippi River’s west bank just upstream from downtown Minneapolis. The city is a northwestern suburb of the Twin Cities Metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is the second largest suburb of that area. There are about 3.3 million residents found in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, making it the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The city is known for having one of the top public golf courses in the country, the Edinburgh USA Golf Course, designed and created by Robert Trent Jones II. Brooklyn Park is listed as a “Tree City USA”, with many miles of trails and award-winning parks.

PRIME LOCATION

The United States Census Bureau records the total area of the city at 26.57 square miles. Some of the main arterial highway or routes are Interstates 94 and 694 in the south, U.S. Route 169 in the western part of the city, State Highways 252 in the east, and County Road 81. In 2010, the census showed 75,781 people, 26,229 households, and 18,763 families living in Brooklyn Park, with a population density of 2,906.8 people per square mile. A household’s average size was 2.88, with average family size of 3.40.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Some famous residents of the city are Tim Laudner, catcher for the Minnesota Twins; Dave Lindstrom, catcher for the Detroit Tigers Minors; Pat Neshek, relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres; Krissy Wendell, United States national women’s hockey team Star; Jesse Ventura, former State Governor/mayor of Brooklyn Park from 1991 until 1995; and Gary Edward “Garrison” Keillor, radio host of A Prairie Home Companion and author. Brooklyn Park is served by these three school districts: Osseo Area School District 279, the Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 and Robbinsdale School District 281.
