First Time Coming to Eden Prairie – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Eden Prairie is a pastoral village that exists on the far southwestern fringes of the Twin Cities. From 1880 to 1960, Eden Prairie’s population has been slow-growing, increasing by only 1,300 people. Native Americans first inhabited the area, until an 1851 treaty opened the land west of the Mississippi River to settlement. The first town board meeting of Eden Prairie was held in a log school house in May of 1858, on the same day that Minnesota became a state. The farming community grew very slowly year by year, and the first sign of big development happened in 1946 with the creation of the Flying Cloud Airport.

TODAY

Eden Prairie is in Hennepin County just 12 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis, and it is the 13th largest city in Minnesota. Upstream from the confluence of the Mississippi River, Eden Prairie is the seventh largest suburb of Minneapolis–St. Paul. The city is located on the north bank of the Minnesota River and it has many large lakes and ponds, with more than 170 miles of multi-use trails, 2,250 acres of parks, and 1,300 acres of open space. It was formerly just a bedroom suburb in the 1960s, but today has more than 2,200 businesses and is the headquarters of a number of large businesses.

PRIME LOCATION

At an elevation of 906 feet, Eden Prairie’s land is made up of rolling hills and bluffs that overlook the Minnesota River . The city’s total area of 35.19 square miles has zones of prairie and mixed mostly deciduous forests. Four of the main routes in the city are Interstate 494, U.S. Routes 169 and 212, and Minnesota State Highway 5. The 2010 census showed there were 60,797 people comprising 23,930 households, with 16,517 families living in the city. The average size of a household was 2.53 and the average size of a family was 3.08.

QUALITY OF LIFE

In 2008 Eden Prairie’s community raised over $400 to build a veterans’ memorial. The memorial highlights service to country and world peace, with two bronze sculptures designed and constructed by world-class sculptor Neil Brodin. The service-to-country sculpture shows an injured airman being carried over the shoulders of a soldier, and the world-peace sculpture depicts a woman touching a globe to honor women who have served. Some notable people from the city are Chuck Foreman, Former Minnesota Vikings running back #44 and Former New England Patriots Player; Andrew Alberts, from the Vancouver Canucks; Rachel Bootsma, Olympian Swimmer; and Jasper Brinkley, player for the Minnesota Vikings.
