Dutch and English settlers formed the European colonization of this part of the New Netherlands. Since the mid-19th century, Minnetonka has changed from heavily wooded wilderness to extensive farming to rapid industrialization to its current residential suburban state. In 1852 a claim was staked on Minnehaha Creek where they established the first privately operated mill in Minnesota west of the Mississippi River. The mill produced oak timbers that were used to create the first suspension bridge across the Mississippi River in 1853 at St. Anthony Falls. The village around the mill was the first permanent European-American settlement west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County.

Minnetonka is a suburban city eight miles west of Minneapolis, in Hennepin County, Minnesota, with a 2010 population of 49,734. “Minnetonka” is derived from the Dakota Indian mni tanka which means “great water”. The city is the location of the country’s largest privately owned company in terms of revenue, Cargill, founded in 1865. It is also the home of United Healthcare, the state’s largest publicly owned company. The top employers in the city are UnitedHealth Group, with 4,678 employees; Cargill, with 2,350 employees; and Emerson Process Management, with 1,600 employees.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Minnetonka’s total area of 28.22 square miles is 26.93 square miles of land and 1.29 square miles of water. Lake Minnetonka is one of the largest lakes in Minnesota, and Minnetonka includes its eastern tip. Lake Minnetonka’s outlet is Minnehaha Creek that twists through South Minneapolis and ends at Minnehaha Falls where it flows into the Mississippi River. The city is located 8 miles west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, with a population of 49,734 people, 21,901 households, and 13,619 families.

Minnetonka has three private and parochial schools: Accell Academy, an accredited private college preparatory school serving grades K-12; Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, preschool through eighth grade; and Minnetonka Christian Academy. Hennepin County Library is headquartered in the Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka.
