YESTERDAY

Plymouth’s history goes back as far as 1400-1500 AD, with the original inhabitants being the Dakota, with their encampment at the north end of Medicine Lake. The name Medicine Lake comes from a Native American word that means “Lake of the Spirit”, named after a warrior who overturned his canoe where his body was never found. White settlers of Plymouth formed a militia and fought the Dakota at Fort Ridgely in the Dakota War of 1862. After the Civil War, Plymouth swelled to a population of 1,074, garnering $667 in annual taxes in 1880. Farming was the trade of most settlers.
