First Time Coming to Saint Paul – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Around two thousand years ago, the Saint Paul area was originally inhabited by the Hopewell Native Americans. This is indicated by the existence of burial mounds in present-day Indian Mounds Park. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, an Army officer negotiated about 100,000 acres of land from the local Dakota tribes in 1805 to establish a fort there. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes damaged hundreds of buildings downtown in 1904, causing $1.78 million worth of damages to the city that also ripped spans from the High Bridge.

TODAY

Saint Paul is the second-most populous city of the U.S. state of Minnesota and the state capital. Its 2010 population was 285,068, and it is the county seat of Ramsey County, which is the smallest and most densely populated county in Minnesota. Saint Paul sits mostly on the east bank of the Mississippi River and it rose to prominence in 1849 after being named the capital of the Minnesota Territory. Minneapolis may be better-known nationally, but Saint Paul has many important institutions, as well as the state government. It is known for the Xcel Energy Center, the Science Museum of Minnesota, and as the home of the Minnesota Wild.

Saint Paul is a landing port at the connection of the Mississippi and Minnesota River, with its history and growth tied to water. Situated in east-central Minnesota, it has a municipal boundary formed by the Mississippi River on part of the city’s west, southwest, and southeast sides. Minneapolis lies to the west. Saint Paul’s largest lakes are Pig’s Eye Lake (part of the Mississippi), Lake Phalen, and Lake Como. It’s continental climate is typical of the Upper Midwestern United States, with frigid and snowy winters and hot and humid summers. Saint Paul experiences one of the widest ranges of temperatures on earth for any major city.
