First Time Coming to St. Cloud – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Europeans encountered various indigenous peoples like the Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Winnebago tribes when they started to trade with the Native American peoples in what is now known as the St. Cloud area. Those indigenous people had been there for thousands of years. In 1849, Minnesota was organized as a territory and was settlements were allowed in 1851 following treaty negotiations with the Winnebago tribe. The settlement was named St. Cloud after Saint-Cloud, Paris, where Napoleon’s favorite palace was located. The settler, John Wilson, chose the name because he had French Huguenot ancestry and an interest in Napoleon.

TODAY

Saint Cloud has the largest population center in Minnesota’s central region, and can be abbreviated St. Cloud. The Mississippi River runs through it, and St. Cloud owns and operates a hydroelectric dam on the river that produces up to nine megawatts of electricity. It is the eighth largest city in the state with a population of 65,986 according to the 2012 census, and it is 65 miles northwest of the “Twin Cities” of Minneapolis–St. Paul. St. Cloud State University is located in the city, between downtown and the Beaver Islands, and is Minnesota’s second-largest public university. A popular destination for kayak and canoe enthusiasts, the approximately 30 undeveloped islands belong to a 12-mile stretch of state-designated wild and scenic river.

There are about 95 parks that take up over 1,400 acres of land, with the largest developed park being Whitney Memorial Park, which is located on the site of the former city airport. St. Cloud is a regional transportation hub for Minnesota, and it has several rail lines running through it. The city’s St. Cloud Metro Bus was given an award in 2007 as the best transit system of its size found in North America.
