First Time Coming to Woodbury – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Woodbury is over 36.0 square miles in size, and a direct descendant of one of the state’s first congressional townships. It was a portion of the Minnesota Territory that was divided up after being ceded by the Native Americans, when the United States opened it to settlement. It was originally named Red Rock, until it was realized that another Red Rock existed in Minnesota, so it was renamed Woodbury after Levi Woodbury. He was the first justice of the Supreme Court of the United States to attend law school. The area was mostly woods, but when settled, was converted to farmland in 1844. The first town hall was erected in 1876, after the township government was organized in 1858. It was in 1955 that the first suburban housing development was created, after the city saw metropolitan expansion as farmland turned to developments and shopping malls.

TODAY

Woodbury, of Washington County, Minnesota, is a suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area situated east of Saint Paul along Interstate 94. With 2012 population estimates at around 64,496 people, the city is the 10th largest in the state. State Farm Insurance was once a huge employer in the city, but the large facility was relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, with a smaller work force retained at another site in Mendota Heights. A lot of Woodbury residents find employment at 3M headquarters that are located in Maplewood a few miles west. Retail forms a large portion of the economy, with the two largest centers of Tamarack Village, found near the intersection of Radio Drive and Interstate 94, and Woodbury Village, located around the intersection of Valley Creek Road and Interstate 494. South Washington County Schools is one of the largest employers with 1,036 workers.

PRIME LOCATION

The city’s total area of 35.56 square miles is bounded on the north side by Interstate 94, the south side by 60th Street, the west side by Century Avenue, and the east side by Manning Avenue. It has adjoining cities of Oakdale, Landfall, Lake Elmo, Cottage Grove, Maplewood, Newport and Afton. Woodbury is between the valleys of the Mississippi River and St. Croix River. Much of the town exists within the watershed of Valley Creek, one of the few remaining trout streams in the Twin Cities area. Several small lakes are found in Woodbury, including Powers, Wilmes, Colby, Carver, and Battle Creek.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Woodbury has 45 parks and one hundred miles of trails that cover 3,000 acres. Many of the parks are connected by these mostly paved trails, and three of the largest parks encompass Colby, Wilmes, and Powers lakes. Bielenberg Sports Center is a central location for sports, with softball fields, baseball fields, soccer fields, football fields, sand volleyball courts, and an ice arena. Privately owned Prestwick, and publicly owned Eagle Valley, are two golf courses located in the city. The city hosts many local events year-round, with a popular summer event named Woodbury Days that is held in Ojibway Park each year, that includes a parade, carnival, live music, fireworks, and many booths.
