Those indigenous people had been there for thousands of years. In 1849, Minnesota was organized as a territory and was settlements were allowed in 1851 following treaty negotiations with the Winnebago tribe. The settlement was named St. Cloud after Saint-Cloud, Paris, where Napoleon’s favorite palace was located. The settler, John Wilson, chose the name because he had French Huguenot ancestry and an interest in Napoleon.
